Itinerary
Arrival at the Lodge
Pickup at the bus terminal or airport, followed by a free morning to have breakfast and stroll around at your own pace. Late in the morning, transfer to Puerto Bolívar to board a boat heading to our lodge: a 40-minute navigation along the Madre de Dios River.
Upon arrival at Corto Maltes Amazonía Lodge, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink made from seasonal natural fruits.
First introduction to the jungle accompanied by your guide, who will help you discover tropical trees, medicinal plants, and other natural wonders within the 60-hectare Corto Maltes Amazonia concession.
Visit to a rubber collectors’ camp, one of the most important economic activities in the Madre de Dios region. You will learn about the traditional rubber (latex) extraction process, used in many everyday products. This hike lasts approximately 2 hours.
Before dinner, you will enjoy a night boat excursion for a "Caiman Safari." With a bit of luck, you may also spot other wildlife along the riverbanks.
Overnight in a standard room.
Lake Sandoval & Wildlife Observation
After enjoying a coffee or tea, departure for Lake Sandoval.
Following approximately 20 minutes of navigation along the Madre de Dios River, you will arrive at the entrance to Lake Sandoval. A 3 km hike through the lush tropical rainforest then begins, leading into the Tambopata National Reserve. Along the way, you will encounter towering trees, snakes, monkeys (squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, and capuchins), as well as a wide variety of birds (notably hoatzins, kingfishers, and snakebirds).
Once at Lake Sandoval, you will explore the lake in small rowing boats in search of giant otters. You may also observe caimans, piranhas, and numerous bird species.
Lunch at the lodge.
In the afternoon, you will visit one of the two towers at Corto Maltes. One stands at 20 meters and the other at 42 meters high. Both are designed for observing birds and other wildlife from the canopy, and you will also enjoy a beautiful sunset (the guide will coordinate the visit according to passengers’ preferences). You will also visit a Brazil nut (castaña) harvesting camp.
Overnight in a standard room.
Meeting Their Origins
In the morning, we will visit a chacra (local farm). This place belongs to a typical family from the rural area, who grow fruits and vegetables naturally, without the use of chemicals. You will have the opportunity to discover and even taste a variety of seasonal tropical fruits and other local products.
In the afternoon, we will visit a native family from the Machiguenga ethnic group, one of the many indigenous communities of the Peruvian Amazon basin. They will share elements of their ancestral culture: their language, customs, traditional clothing, hunting techniques, craftsmanship, and music associated with Ayahuasca ceremonies. You will also learn how they use natural resources to create tools, build their homes, and craft clothing and jewelry—essential elements of their daily life.
Overnight in a standard room.
Morning Wildlife Observation & Souvenir Shopping
We begin the day with a short walk of about 20 minutes to reach the clay lick, where you can observe 3 to 5 species of parrots. These birds gather here to feed on a specific type of clay found in certain areas of the region, essential for regulating their metabolism. A truly colorful and captivating natural spectacle.
After breakfast, transfer by boat back to the city of Puerto Maldonado.
One of our vehicles will be waiting for you. We will head to the local market for a short visit (15 to 20 minutes), where you can discover a variety of local products. We will then continue to the airport for check-in for your respective flights.
