Responsible Tourism: Our Commitment Against Child Sexual Exploitation

At Escapate Peru, as responsible and sustainable tourism operators, we firmly adhere to the ESNNA Code of Conduct (Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents) established by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

What is the ESNNA Code?

The ESNNA program is a national policy created to prevent and eradicate sexual exploitation of minors in the tourism sector. As a company committed to slow and conscious tourism, we consider protecting society’s most vulnerable members fundamental.

Child sexual exploitation constitutes a serious violation of human rights that undermines the physical, social, and emotional development of children and adolescents. This problem can manifest in various forms:

  • Sexual exploitation in tourism and travel
  • Online sexual exploitation (Internet and digital technologies)
  • Human trafficking for sexual exploitation purposes

The Reality in Numbers

In Peru:

  • 3.98% of Peruvian adults acknowledge being victims of sexual exploitation before age 18 (2015)
  • Between 14,000 and 26,000 minors aged 10-17 are exposed to possible sexual exploitation nationally
  • Official figures are limited due to the hidden nature of this crime

Globally:

  • Mexico: 20,000 estimated victims in sex tourism (ECPAT, 2016)
  • Philippines: 100,000 minor victims of sexual exploitation (ECPAT, 2016)
  • 64.8% of child sexual abuse material victims are girls (ECPAT, 2018)
